Budget Commander: 10 Rules for Building Strong Decks for Less
Some Commander staples cost more than an entire precon, but price and power aren’t the same thing. With smart choices, a budget deck can hold its own at most casual tables.
1. Decide your budget up front
Pick a total, such as $50 or $100, and stick to it. A clear limit forces creative choices and keeps the hobby sustainable.
2. Focus on synergy over raw power
A tight theme where every card works together often beats a pile of expensive staples. Synergy is free.
3. Spend first on mana
If you upgrade one thing, make it your lands and ramp. Consistent mana improves every single game.
4. Use budget dual lands
Taplands, gain-lands and other cheap duals aren’t flashy, but they fix your colors for a fraction of the price of premium lands.
5. Play reprinted staples
Cards reprinted in precons and supplemental sets are often very affordable. Check reprints before buying an older printing.
6. Lower your curve
Cheaper spells mean more plays per turn. A low curve makes up for a lack of expensive power cards.
7. Pack plenty of removal
Good removal is often cheap. Make sure you can answer the threats your opponents’ pricey decks put out.
8. Avoid chasing the ‘best’ version
Every expensive card has a cheaper alternative that does 80% of the job. Use it and spend the difference elsewhere.
9. Buy singles, not boosters
For building a specific deck, buying individual cards is far more cost-effective than opening packs.
10. Upgrade over time
Your deck doesn’t need to be finished on day one. Add one or two upgrades a month and enjoy watching it improve.
