Commander precons are a fantastic starting point, but they’re built to appeal to everyone. That means a few off-theme cards, a slightly clunky mana base and not quite enough interaction. The good news: a handful of smart swaps makes a huge difference.
Here’s the framework we use for every precon upgrade guide on Commander Cove.
Step 1: Play it out of the box first
Before you change anything, play at least three or four games. You’ll quickly see what the deck wants to do and which cards just sit in your hand.
Step 2: Find the deck’s core plan
Write down, in one sentence, how the deck wins. For example: “Make lots of tokens, then pump them all for a big alpha strike.” Every upgrade should push that plan forward.
Step 3: Cut the weakest cards
Look for cards that:
- Don’t support the core plan
- Cost too much for what they do
- Enter the battlefield tapped when they don’t need to
- Only work in very narrow situations
Ten to fifteen cuts is a good first round.
Step 4: Upgrade in this order
- Mana and ramp. Smoother mana makes every game better. Add efficient mana rocks and better lands.
- Interaction. Cheap removal and a board wipe or two.
- Card draw. Make sure you don’t run out of gas.
- Synergy pieces. Cards that make your commander’s ability shine.
- Finishers. A couple of reliable ways to close out the game.
Step 5: Set a budget tier
| Budget | What you can do |
|---|---|
| Under $25 | Fix the mana with budget duals, add staple ramp and cheap removal |
| $25–$75 | Add stronger synergy cards and better card draw |
| $75+ | Premium lands and the strongest staples in your colors |
Keep your bracket in mind
Upgrading can push a deck into a higher power bracket. If your playgroup mostly uses precons, focus on consistency (mana, draw, removal) rather than raw power, so games stay fun for everyone.
