How Precon Release Timing Works
Almost every Commander release follows the same rhythm. Once you know it, you can plan purchases instead of reacting to hype.
- Announcement: Wizards names the set and release date, often a year or more ahead. Deck counts sometimes come with it.
- First look: A few months out, deck names, colors, and leading characters appear, usually at a convention panel or livestream.
- Reveal season: About four to six weeks before release, the face commanders and new cards are previewed, then full decklists are published.
- Prerelease: Local stores run events the week before launch. Precons are often available for pickup or preorder at the same time.
- Release: Decks hit stores and online shops worldwide.
When to buy. Preorder only if you want a specific deck on day one or you are chasing a Collector’s Edition, which can be harder to find later. For standard decks, waiting usually costs you nothing. Supply is deep, and once the launch rush fades, prices often slip below MSRP. That is a pattern, not a guarantee. Decks with a hot reprint can climb instead, so check current prices before you assume a discount is coming. Our Commander precon buyer’s guide walks through picking a deck by playstyle and budget.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Commander precons come out each year?
In the count is 23 decks across eight releases, including the Star Trek decks. Wizards has said each of its six 2027 sets will carry four decks, which works out to 24.
Why do some decks cost $29.99 and others $74.99?
The Foundations decks are mono-color starter decks priced for new players. Decks from Wizards’ own worlds sit at $49.99, while Universes Beyond decks based on outside franchises like Marvel and Star Trek are priced at $74.99 or $69.99.
When are Star Trek decklists revealed?
Wizards had not published them as of this update. Going by recent sets, full lists usually appear a few weeks before release, so late October or early November is a reasonable guess.
Are precons good enough to play as they are?
Yes. They are built to play against one another right out of the box. A few targeted swaps make a big difference, which is what our upgrade guides cover.
