Wizards is warming up for Marvel: Darkhold Destiny with a “countdown kit”: a 30-card Secret Lair called Marvel’s History of Heroes. It is mostly reprints with new Marvel art, and several of them are cards Commander players have been waiting to see cheaper.
In short
- A 30-card Marvel Secret Lair, Marvel’s History of Heroes, goes on sale November 2 for $199.99.
- It reprints three Game Changers (Fierce Guardianship, Biorhythm and Opposition Agent) plus Tainted Pact and a first-ever reprint of Molten Duplication.
- The nine priciest reprints alone add up to roughly $216 at today’s cheapest prices, so the box is worth it if you would play most of the cards.
- Two new cards from Marvel: Darkhold Destiny are inside, but they are not legal until that set releases on April 9.
Price and release date
The kit goes on sale November 2 for $199.99 on the Secret Lair store. As with most Secret Lairs, expect it to be sold for a limited time and then show up on the secondary market. If you only want one or two of the cards, singles are usually the cheaper route a few weeks after the drop ships.
The reprints that matter for Commander
These are the cards with the biggest impact on real Commander decks, with the cheapest copy you can buy right now. Prices are approximate US market prices for the cheapest printing, checked today.
| Card | Cheapest copy now | Why Commander players want it |
|---|---|---|
| Fierce Guardianship | $62.80 | Game Changer. Free counterspell for noncreature spells while you control your commander. |
| Biorhythm | $34.46 | Game Changer since its unban. Sets each player’s life total to the number of creatures they control, often a win for a wide creature deck. |
| Tainted Pact | $29.90 | The other half of the Thassa’s Oracle combo in many cEDH lists. |
| Timber Protector | $23.33 | Makes your Treefolk and Forests indestructible. |
| Opposition Agent | $18.97 | Game Changer. Steals whatever your opponents tutor up. |
| Devastation | $18.48 | An old-school wipe of every creature and land. |
| Molten Duplication | $13.62 | First reprint ever. Copy any artifact or creature with haste. |
| Heroic Intervention | $9.63 | Green’s best protection spell for a whole board. |
| Snuff Out | $5.06 | Free kill spell if you control a Swamp. |
Three of these are on the official Game Changers list. If you put Fierce Guardianship, Biorhythm and Opposition Agent in the same deck, that deck is already at the Bracket 3 limit. Our brackets guide explains what that means for your table.
The rest of the box
The other cards are cheaper staples and fun includes, among them Lightning Bolt, Damn, Court of Bounty, Fiery Confluence, Genesis Wave, Unbreakable Formation, Unholy Heat, Villainous Wrath, Titanic Ultimatum. They round out the theme but do not carry the price.
Two new Darkhold Destiny cards
The kit also includes two new cards from the upcoming set: Beta Ray Bill and Doctor Strange, Master of Magic. They are an early look at the set, but you cannot play them in sanctioned events until Marvel: Darkhold Destiny releases on April 9. Most Commander playgroups follow the official legality, so check with yours before you sleeve them up early.
Should you buy it?
Buy it if you play cEDH or high-power Commander and want Fierce Guardianship, Tainted Pact and Opposition Agent in one go, or if you love the Marvel art. Skip it if you only want one card: Fierce Guardianship and Biorhythm on their own cost less than half the box. Either way, reprints like these usually push the price of older printings down, so if you were planning to buy singles, waiting until after November 2 is reasonable.
